A Christening Gift For Tyrion

A couple of weeks ago I was asked if I would create a drawing or painting for a Christening gift. I'm all about the opportunities that come my way especially and in particular with anything that gives me the opportunity to create!! I was delighted to be asked and basically had free reign to create this gift. The only thing I really had to do was to make this gift personal.

The name Tyrion is a very unusal name. My automatic response to this brief was to find out where this name originated from and also if I could find out the meaning behind the name. A little research was then undertaken .... :) 

Several websites later ... It is said that the name comes from the Land of Eoghan with variations of the name including Tyrone and with obvious Celtic origins. From here I started to focus on the idea of celtic designs and in particular the celtic alpabhet and The Book of Kells and how it is illustrated ( I absolutely love The Book of Kells!!) 

 Keeping a simple idea of just using the name ( as it is quite unusual) and inspired by celtic typography here are some of the initial sketches ...

​After sketching out the design of the piece the next thing was to consider was size, colour and if there was anything else that could be added to the drawing not just the name.

Again thinking of how personal I can make it I began to think about when Tyrion was born and looking at the idea of birthstones and their colour. In creating this design I thought it would be a lovely idea to include his parents birthstones also ... (well the colour that represented them) ...

'Once size, layout, design, colour and frame were decided on I was able to then begin the real deal!! I had actually forgotten how much I love to draw typography and make it unique so this was a most enjoyable commission to create! To create this piece pencil and designer's gouache (a type of paint) were used to paint it.
